Lets face it-learning math can sometimes be a chore. Granted, math is not the most intuitive subject, but thanks to a few handy apps, teaching and learning math has become a lot easier! We scoured Apple’s app store to provide you with the best math apps for your iphone or ipad. As a math tutor in NYC, I use all of these apps listed with my students.
1. Mathstronaut
I’m a big fan of Mathstronaut because it’s tons of fun and highly informative. The app tests one’s knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. As you can imagine, Mahstronaut is intended for younger children looking to master rudimentary math skills. The game itself has two modes; blast off and countdown. The game features two game modes-blastoff and countdown. In blast off, players must answer questions correctly in order to power their ship in outer space. In countdown, users have a set time to answer questions. Mathstronaut features great graphics and cute animations. We’re sure Mathstronaut will be a hit with your child!
2. Hungry Fish
This cute game is another app that stresses addition and subtraction and other basic operations. The premise is very simple-users must drag two bubbles together to equal the number on the fish. If you correctly arrive at the fish’s number, the fish will proceed to eat the bubbles and the user will get points. While not groundbreaking, Hungry Fish is a cute game that forces the player to perform basic operations in their head. Fans of Finding Nemo will absolutely love this game.
3. Factor Samurai
Factor Samurai is a fun, addicting app that emphasizes factoring and identifying prime numbers. The premise is pretty simple; players must cut down all non-prime numbers thrown their way. A friendly reminder, prime numbers are numbers that cannot be divided into smaller numbers. For example, 7,11, 13 , 19 are all examples of prime numbers. By identifying prime (or non prime) numbers, children will gain a better understanding of the times table. This game is pure fun and borrows heavily from Fruit Ninja. The best part about Factor Samurai? It’s FREE! Warning: this game is addicting!
4. Math Blaster-Hyper Blast
Like the other apps listed, Math Blaster is aimed towards younger children looking to advance their knowledge on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Players control a space ship of some sorts through outer space winding through tunnels, blasting enemies, and defeating robots by correctly answering math problems. The game is a great mixture of entertainment and learning. Players control their spaceship by tilting their device, which children really seem to enjoy. From my experience, children really love the fun nature of Math Blaster. Usually they have so much they don’t even know their learning!
It can be a challenge trying to get children to study math. Just ask any parent, teacher, or tutor! Luckily, with the abundance of fun, math apps available, this no longer has to be case. All of the apps listed above are a nice mixture of entertainment and education. See, your iPhone and iPad can be a great learning tool! Please find our link: http://mynyctutors.com/?
